22 Mar 1923 Jermain Whitehouse obituary

Jermain Erving Whitehouse was born in Oswego, N.Y. July 7, 1843. He came with his parents to Houston county, Minn, in 1856. Feb 1 1864 he enlisted in the 1st Minnesota Battery Light Artillery Volunteers and saw service under General Grant at Vicksburg, and was with Sherman on this March to the Sea. He received an Honorable Discharge June 30, 1865. He answered to the call of the Great Commander at 15 minutes of 4:00 o'clock Sunday p.m., March 11, 1923, dying by a stroke in his home in Houston. Had he lived till July 7 he would have been 80 years of age.

Previous to his enlistment, Mr. Whitehouse was married to Louise Appleby. After the war he settled in Money Creek and in 1869 was married to Dora Wilson, who died Dec. 15, 184. Mr Whitehouse was again married Sept. 24, 1885 to Mrs. Ella Whitney, who survives him. His children are as follows: Frank Erving Whitehouse, Norfolk, Neb., Mrs. Delo Viers and Fred Erving Whitehouse, Rushford, Minn., Mrs. Harry Smith of Houston and Vernon S. Whitehouse, Rodman, Iowa. He also leaves 11 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren and one brother, Charles Whitehouse of Houston. Funeral services were held Wednesday at 1 p.m. from the Presbyterian church, Rev. McKinney officiating. Prof. Wled had charge of the music. The burial was in Money Creek and services at the grave were conducted by the G.A.R. and the American Legion, who attend in a body and whose impressive ceremony was a fitting tribute to the worth and services of an honored veteran. The American Legion also furnished the pall-bearers.

The sympathy of our community goes out to the stricken family their sudden bereavement.
