3 Jul 1931 Harriett Bass obituary HARRIET DILL BASS Mrs. Zeno Bass age 85, a resident of Mills County since 1875, passed away last Friday morning at home of her son Mayo Bass north of Tabor, after a brief illness. Mrs. Bass was a native of Indiana, but came west to Kansas in 1868, and to Mills Coo., Iowa in 1875. She was the mother of seven children, of whom six survive, Mrs. Emily Timmons of Valley, Nebr.; Mrs. Ida Dillehay of Council Bluffs; Mrs. Nannie Hodges of Glenwood; Mayo Bass of Tabor; Zeno Bass Jr. of Strahan; and Louis Bass of Malvern. For 40 years Mr. and Mrs. Bass made their home on their farm in Rawles Township, but in 1912 retired and made their home in Malvern until the death of Mr. Bass in 1923. Since then the mother has made her home with her children. Besides her sons and daughters she is survived by 26 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Funeral services were held in the Methodist Church in Malvern Sunday afternoon. Conducted by Rev. Schearmann, assisted by Rev. Rarick. Music was furnished by Mrs. D.O. Cunningham, Mrs. John Beckwith, R.M. Criswell and J.R McClymond. Accompanied by Mrs. Hubert Chambers. Pallbearers were grandsons Austin Bass, Lyle Hodges, Herman Dillehay, Royal Bass, Mayo Bass and Rex Timmons. Interment was in the Malvern Cemetery. TABOR BEACON JULY 8, 1931 The following is the obituary: Harriet Dill was born in Morgantown, Indiana, Jan. 4, 1846. She was the daughter of Peter and Emily Dill. She spent the early years of her life in Indiana until the time of her marriage to Zeno Bass, Feb. 21, 1866. Seven children were born to their union; one son, Ora, died at the age of twenty-five years. The others survive her. They are: Mrs. Emily Timmons of Valley, Nebr., Mrs. Ida Dillehay of Council Bluffs, Mrs. Nannie Hodges and Mayo Bass of GlenwoodZeno Bass of Strahan, and Louis Bass of Malvern. She is also survived by twenty-six grandchildren and twenty-three great grandchildren. They moved to Kansas shortly after they were married where they resided for several years and then moved to Iowa, locating on a farm in Rawles township, Mills county, in 1875. Here they lived for thirty-nine years, building up one of the fine fafarms of that section and adding to it as time went by. Here they reared their fine family and their hospitable home was known far and near. Mrs. Bass was a good neighbor and many there be who recall her many acts of kindness and neighborly help. She was a firm and devout believer in her God and read the Bible as her daily guide. In 1912 they retired from the farm and moved to Malvern where they built a fine home in the northwest part of town and here they lived until 1923 when Mr. Bass died. Since then she has made her home much of the time with her children. The past few months she seemed to be in fair health and when in town a short time ago she seemed very cheerful and enjoyed visiting with her friends as they came to see her. She was remarkably preserved for one of her age. Her death came as a distinct shock to all who knew her. She will be missed. |
