FIND A GRAVE
At about 4:15, the unit was called to a one-car accident on April 27, 1977 about six miles south of Emerson on Highway 59. A southbound late model Volkswagen van driven by Richard Brown, 33, formerly of Emerson, apparently fell asleep at the wheel and left the road and overturned. Brown was killed instantly.
His present address was listed as Burlington Junction, Mo. He was thrown from the vehicle as it left the road, and the vehicle passed over his body.
He was pronounced dead at the scene by Mills County Medical Examiner, Dr. Robert Fryzek. The accident was covered by Highway Patrol Trooper Chuck Vail and Mills County Deputy Sheriff Ed James.
Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, the former Lana McKee of Emerson, and three sons, Adam, R.W. and Mark, and by his parents, the Vernon Browns of Red Oak, a brother James Brown of Council Bluffs, and his sisters, Mrs. Gordon Thomas and Mrs. Keith Veager, Villisca, and Paula Brown, Red Oak. Funeral services are pending.

Final Rites Held For Richard W. Brown
A former Emerson resident, Richard W. Brown, 32, Clearmont, Mo., was killed about 4:15 a.m., April 27, in a one vehicle accident 6 miles south of Emerson on U.S. 59. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Brown, Red Oak.
According to Iowa Highway Patrol Trooper Charles Vaile of Shenandoah, Brown apparently went to sleep and the van he was driving left the highway and overturned. Brown was thrown from the van and it passed over his body when it overturned.
Brown was pronounced dead at the scene by Dr. Robert Fryzek, Mills County Medical Examiner. Mills County Deputy Sheriff Ed James assisted Trooper Vaile at the scene.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 29, at 2 p.m. at First Baptist church, Clearmont, Mo., with the Rev. Don Barnett officiating. Burial was in Emerson Cemetery
and arrangements were by Mansfield-Hertz Funeral Home, Malvern.
Brown was a Vietnam Conflict veteran and a student at Iowa Western Community College, Clarinda.
He is survived by his wife at Clearmont, the former Lana McKee of Emerson; three sons, Mark, R.W. and Adam, all at home; parents, Red Oak; mother, Mrs. Rowena Nolle of Wiota; brother, James, Council Bluffs; three sisters, Mrs. Gordon Thomas and Mrs. Keith Yeager, both Villisca, and Paul Brown of Red Oak, Iowa
