He attended Kansas Uni., where he continued his special study of the Greek language. Married Esther Bengtson of Swedeburg, Nebr., of an old pioneer family. She was also a student at Lutheran College He then studied at Aug. Lutheran Seminary where he graduated with B. D. degree and served pastorates at Kent City, Mich., Kirkland, Ill., Gary, Indd., and Hager City, Wisc. He also devoted time to scientific pursuits especially meteorology and radio. He broadcast his own church services in Kirkland with self-made equipment and perfected many radio innovations. He was a forceful and eloquent speaker. He died of a heart ailment in Tribune, Kansas, in 1940, from which he had suffered most of his life. Esther is now living with son Laverne in Florida. S. Was commissioned a lieutenant and became instructor in flying for the Corps. Was sent to the Pacific theatre of war and while there advanced to 1st lieutenant. Won scholarship in diplomatic sciences at Virginia Uni., where he received his M. A. degree and has completed work for his Ph. D. THE WASHINGTON POST - February 15, 1998 MERLYN NELSON TRUED -- International Banker Merlyn Nelson Trued, 75, a retired international banker and financier who during the 1960s was assistant secretary of the treasury for international affairs, died of complications from pneumonia Feb. 13 at a hospital in Hanover, N.H. Mr. Trued, who lived in Washington, was visiting relatives in New Hampshire when he was stricken. He also had served as chief financial officer of the Inter-American Development Bank from 1970 to 1976. Before his 1961 appointment to the Treasury Department, he had been a vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and financial manager of an engineering firm in Saigon. After five years with the Treasury Department, he left in 1966 to become senior vice president for international affairs with the Central National Bank in Cleveland. He was chairman and chief executive officer of a commercial bank in Detroit from 1976 to 1978 and director of the Bermuda Monetary Authority in Hamilton, Bermuda, for four years until his retirement in 1983. Mr. Trued was born in Ceresco, Neb., and graduated from the University of Oregon. He received a master's degree in international affairs and a doctorate in international finance from the University of Virginia. His marriage to Josephine Schafer Trued ended in divorce. | 573 | THE TRUED FAMILY IN THE U.S.A. NILS TRUED AND HIS WIFE JOHANNA MATHILDA NILS TRUED: Second child of Trued and Elsie Nilsson. Born Nov. 27, 1844, he came from Attarp, Kristianstads Lan, Sweden. First of family to arrive in America in the early spring of 1868, he was followed in succession by three sisters, one brother and his parents. He went directly to Hastings, Minnesota, but also lived at Red Wing. Helped construct RR between Chicago and Minneapolis. Worked also as a farm-hand and did some tailoring, a trade he had apprenticed in Sweden. In Sweden he attended grade and high (trade) school, and spent three years in the Swedish army. He ha gray-blue eyes, was rugged, but of medium build. In 1869 he set out for the open prairies of Nebraska, about a year after the state had been admitted to the Union. He crossed the Missouri River below Omaha on the Plattsmouth ferry and in the company of Betsy, Nellie and Swan Dedrick,-whom he h had escorted from Red Wing,-proceeded to the little village of Lancaster (Lincoln). He immediately filed on a homestead 18 miles north of town and the next spring, with the help of Martin (Magnus) Erickson, who had just arrived with brother John from Sweden, he built a dugout-soddie on a southern hillside. Was interested in electronics and radio and when WW2 came he enlisted in the U. S. Army where he served as instructor in these subjects. Became a sergeant. He married Erma Schroeder of Arconville, Ill., in June 1944. Works in the radar division of Western Electric Co., at Winston-Salem, N. C. He also serves as organist in the Lutheran church, where he spent hundreds of hours and vacation time building an electronic organ, which the city claims is superior to most national makes. Clarence Trued, Author - Published 1953 ST PETERSBURG TIMES - OCTOBER 24, 1998 TRUED, PHILIP L. TRUED, PHILIP L., 86, St. Petersburg, died Thursday (Oct. 22, 1998) at Hospice Woodside, Pinellas Park. Born in Lawrence, Kan. he came here in 1967 from Sanford. He was a field director of the National Red Cross for 31 years and was a member of American Red Cross Retirees. He was a 1935 graduate of Augustina University of Rock Island, Ill. Locally, he was the last surviving charter member of Redeemer Lutheran Church. During World War II, he served in the Navy. Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Eva C.; a son, C. Clarence Trued, Author - Published 1953 FIND A GRAVE Samuel McKee, Jr., age 70, of Red Oak, Iowa passed away Tuesday, January 26, 1999 at his residence north of Red Oak after an extended illness. Samuel Sullivan McKee, Jr. was born August 21, 1928 south of Red Oak, Iowa, son of Samuel and Julia Trued McKee. He graduated from Strahan High School in 1947 and was united in marriage to Lillie Lees on June 6,1948 in Oakland, Iowa. They farmed south of Emerson and also North of Red Oak. Lillie preceded Sam in death on December 18,1975. Sam was united in marriage to Grace Frazee on June 13, 1976 in Storm Lake, Iowa. Sam continued to farm until his retirement in 1997 due to ill health. He was active in 4-H as a youth and as a leader for many years and served on the Farmers Mercantile Board for nine years. He was active in the Strahan United Methodist Church but was still a member of the Emerson Baptist Church. Sam was also a member of the Classy Chassis Car Club of Red Oak and served as President. He attended many car shows receiving lots of trophies for his car collection. In the past few years he collected John Deere Tractors and later branched out to other "Makes". Sam enjoyed being a member of the Southwestern Iowa 2 Cylinder Club and served on the Board of Directors. He enjoyed meeting friends for coffee and was constantly looking for cars and tractors to restore. Grace and Sam enjoyed many trips looking for "Projects". His big project for last year was organizing the McKee 50th year reunion. He spent many hours ordering and delivering McKee crest T-shirts, caps, and banners. He is survived by his wife, Grace of Red Oak, Iowa; three daughters, Vivian Rasmussen and her husband Merlin of Red Oak, Iowa, Gladys Pierce and her husband Stan of Union, Nebraska; and Sue Gronemeyer and her husband Don of Hastings, Nebraska; six stepchildren, Phyllis Spicer, Vivian Cash and her husband Dave, and William Frazee and his wife Deb all of Emerson, Iowa, Arnold Frazee and his wife Tracey of Glenwood, Iowa, Linda Frazee of Des Moines, IA; Jan Hansen and her husband Jon of Atkins, Iowa; grandchildren, Dawn Miller and her husband. Dan, Alison, Derek and Nolan Pierce, Emily and Hannah Gronemeyer, Cathy, Jeff and Carol Spicer, Curt and Krista Frazee, and Nicholas and Anastasia Frazee; one great grandchild, Samuel Miller; three sisters, Opal Wendt of Omaha, Nebraska, Mildred Parker and her husband Gail of Red Oak, IA and Lola Adkins of Des Moines, IA; three sisters-inlaw, Audrey Vance and her husband Claire of Oakland, Iowa, Lola McKee of Emerson, Iowa and Mildred McKee of Red Oak, Iowa; brother-rin-law, Charles Lees and his and his wife JoAnn of Avoca, Iowa; nieces and nephews and many other relatives and friends. Sam was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Lillie; brothers, Jim, Joe, Pat and Vernon; and infant sister, Helen. Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 29, 1999 at the Emerson Baptist Church with Rev. Richard Person and the Rev. Mary Allsup officiating. Burial was in the Emerson Cemetery. Visitation was open from 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. Thursday, January 28, 1999 at the Nelson-Boylan. Funeral Chapel. Memorials are suggested to the Altrusa Thermal Imaging Camera Fund, Heartland Hospice, Emerson Baptist Church, or the Stratton United Methodist Church. He was born in Kristianstads lan, Sweden and came to America several years after the arrival of his son, Nil Trued, who arrived in the early spring of 1868. He was a man of medium stature, blue eyes, dark brown hair and of gentle manner. He inherited considerable estate from his father and grandfather, - the latter being considered one of the wealthiest men in Sweden in his time, - but through faulty judgment, promiscuous underwriting of notes, etc., he and his immediate family lost the fortune, and almost penniless, he came to America to live with his son Nils until his death.
