Falling Load of Ties Kills C.W. Cogburn

Port Angeles Man Loses Life at Merrill and Ring Headquarters Camp at Pysht Sunday

    Sling Breaks

Employee of Logging Company Walking Beneath Suspended Weight When Strap Parts

Columbus Webster Cogburn, 53, a resident of Port Angeles for 16 years and an employee of the Merrill and Ring Logging Company, lost his life at the Pysht headquarters camp of that company at 9:30 A.M. Sunday, when a load of railroad ties fell upon him.

Working with a traveling crane mounted on a rail car, Mr. Cogburn was placing sand on the slippery track to improve the traction. As he walked beneath the heavy bundle of tie, suspended from the crane, the sling carrying the weight broke and he was caught beneath the descending timbers.

The late Mr. Cogburn was born in Haywood County, North Carolina, on February 16, 1879. Married to Miss Flora Trull in 1901, he and his wife came West in 1906, settling near Sprague in eastern Washington. Two years later they removed to Sedro-Woolley, where they resided until 1916, when they came to Port Angeles.

Mr. Cogburn followed the logging business, operating a yarder for the Merrill and Ring Company intermittently in recent years. He first became connected with that firm in 1922. One summer he spent in truck logging operations near Port Angeles and another season, he was employed in a British Columbia camp.

Surviving relatives include the widow, Mrs. Flora Cogburn, six children, Austin, Ernest, Edna, Norman and William Cogburn and Mrs. Daisy Ward and two grandchildren all living in Port Angeles. Mr. Cogburn's father, four sisters and a brother are at Candler, North Carolina and a second brother makes his home in Denver.

Funeral arrangements had not been completed today but will be announced later by the Dewey Lyden Company, funeral directors, in charge.

    • 1930 Federal Census: 24 Apr 1930, Upper Hominy, Buncombe, North Carolina, USA

    Notes:

John moved "over the mountain" to the Upper Hominy Township in Buncombe County. His first wife's (Bethany) background is sketchy. It is thought that her mother was Adaline Henson Thomas. In 1880, the census showed Bethany and son, Columbus, counted in the household of grandfather Daniel Henson.

Essie Sellers Jervis recalls that Uncle John always had a sense of humor and could initiate a variety of activity. On one occasion he came to visit Essie's mother, his niece, martha Ann Cogburn Sellers. John went with the family to East Fork Baptist Church where he was remembered as the one who established Flower Day (one Sunday each year everyone wore a flower on the lapel). This practice continued for many years.

John Jefferson Cogburn and Clint Farmer went to Tennessee to work. Clint came back home. There was no Post Office at Cruso at that time and John Jefferson wanted to send a letter by Clint Farmer to his wife, Martha Caroline. When he addressed the letter, he thought of a little Chinquapin bush below his house, so he addressed the letter to Martha Cogburn, Chinquapin, N.C. Hence the name Chinquapin Branch or Road. This was told to Essie Sellers Jervis by Clint Farmer. Essie is John Jefferson's great granddaughter.

    Military Service:
(Not confirmed that this is "our" John J. Cogburn). A record dated December 5, 1863 shows that John J. Cogburn enlisted on September 23, 1863 at Camp Vance under Captain J.C. McRae for the period of the war. He was enlisted as a Private in Company E of McRae's Battalion. A receipt dated may 2, 1864 shows that conscript J.J. Cogburn received clothing.
