Ellen and John moved to Nebraska in 1880. Ellen had suffered from consumption (tuberculosis) for one year and spent her last summer in the mountains of Colorado to try to improve her health. She apparently knew her time was short as her obituary says she was trying to get her estate settled as soon as possible and sell off her personal property since all their children were under 16. She was a member of the Christian church, having officially joined at age 16.

    News Item

A little more than a year ago the remains of John D. Gilchrist were brought back from Nebraska for interment. It is a sad duty this week to record the death of his wife at her home near Ashland, Nebraska, December 20, 1895. The father and mother are now both gone, leaving a family of five children the oldest of whom is sixteen years. They were both formerly from this community and the news of Mrs. Gilchrist's death will bring sadness to many hearts. An obituary taken from one

of the Saunders county Nebraska papers appears in this issue.

    Obituary

Ellen J. Black was born August 23, 1855, died at her home in Green precinct, Saunders county, Nebraska aged 40 years months and 3 days. May 1, 1877 she was united in marriage to John D. Gilchrist, at North English, Iowa. In 1880 she

moved with her husband to Nebraska. For nearly a year Mrs Gilchrist suffered with consumption. Last summer was spent in the mountains of Colorado in the hope of to find health but to no avail. She returned and sank rapidly. She hoped to live long enough to settle up her affairs so as to leave her estate in the best possible shape for her children but the grim messenger did not wait for this hope to be realized. She had advertised a sale of her personal property to take place on the 23rd past, but did not live to carry out this plan. Her husband preceded her to the world of spirits about one year and nine months. She leaves five children, all of whom are minors, the oldest being about 16 years of age and the youngest only Six. TwO other children have died. Mrs. Gilchrist was a devout follower of Christ, whom she chose as her Saviour and Guide, when she was sixteen years of age. She found

her denominational home in the Christian church. The funeral was held at New Hope Church Sunday forenoon. It was the largest funeral ever held at that church. Rev. C. A. Huyck, of Ashland conducted the services. the burial was in Cedar Hill Cemetery. Saunders County, Nebraska paper.
