Early Bass history began in the coastal Virginia Tidewater. For many years Bass historians claimed descent from one single 17th century Bass immigrant who immigrated from London to the Colony of Virginia in 1619. In later years a contrarian point of view has emerged which points to inconsistencies in records attributed to the immigrant Nathaniel Basse. Was there more than one individual by that name in the earliest days of Colonial Virginia? This researcher is still exploring the possibilities.

Henry Bass was the son of Charles Bass, who died in Southampton Co, VA in 1780. Charles Bass' parentage has not yet been definitively proven. Some researchers attribute him to being the oldest child of Richard Basse (grandson of the above menttioned Nathaniel Basse) and his wife Jane Bryant of Nansemund. But that relationship, although possible, is not probable. If our Charles Basse was the son of Richard and Jane (Bryant) Basse, he would have been 99 years old at death. This seems a very unlikely possibility in 18th century Virginia.

Since Charles Bass was living in Southampton adjacent to what may have been Richard Basse's son James Bass, there is a greater likelihood that Charles of Southampton was a grandson of Richard & Jane (Bryant) Basse. Earlier records exist for a Charles Bass in the area of Isle of Wight County that became Southampton County and in Surry County. Could our Charles Bass have been a son of the earlier Charles Bass? Or was he instead, a son of James Bass who he was living adjacent to? Documentation that would prove the parentage of Charles Bass of Southampton Co, VA would be greatly appreciated.

State of Virginia, Greensville County, sat on this sixth day of May 1833 personally in open Court before Henry Wyche, Drewy Matthews, Simon B. Sykes and John J. Hinton, the Court of the county of Greensville now sitting, Cain Cain a resident ooof the said County of Greensville and State of Virginia aged seventy.... years who being first duly sworn according to law doth on this oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the act of congress passed June 7th 1832 that he entered the service of the United States under the following named officers and served as herein stated that is to say he went as a private in a militia Company from Brunswick County commanded either by Capt. William Batte or Capt. John Maclin he thinks in this particular tour it was the former Capt. Batte this was soon after he was Eighteen years old and before the taking of Norfolk and he thinks twelve or eighteen months after the war commenced he does not recollect the namme of the field officer nor the month or year he entered the sevice nor the precise time he left it in the Town of Portsmouth Virginia. he was afterward called out in the militia on a six weeks tour which he served and was stationed at Chuckatuck in Nansemond County the greated part of the time. At this time he thinks he was commanded by Capt John Maclin he does not recollect the Regt or field officer to which he was attached or commanded. he was called out another tour but cannot recollect whether for six or twelve weeks. he had previous to this time taken the place of his brother Mastin Cain who at the beginning of this his third tour paid back in his turn the time he had served previously for him this service was at or near the town of Petersburg and he was to have joined the army at that place the day the battle was fought there but was driven by the circumstances after battle to cross the Appomattox river some miles or thereabout above Petersburg and join the army the next day at Chesterfield Court House the Coer crossed James River and went to Wilton where he stayed a considerable time and at this time Lafayette joined the Court to which he was attached with two Thousand men. he was called out a fourth time in the militia and was stationed at Surry ole Court House 8until he was taken sic and obtained a furlough. he cannot recollect the length of this tour nor is he sure but thinks and believes it was Capt. Turner Bynum as Capt afterwards MaMajor Thos Cocke he stated back as soon as his health was sufficiently restored for service and joined the army at Richmond the day after Wallaces surrender at Yorktown. His sickness continued several weeks on his return however and report to..... the officer in command Capt. Benj Blunt. he was discharged and....he supposes he lost or mislaid his discharge so that he cannot exhibit it nor has he any documentary evidence and from the lapse of time of his aged infirmity he can add nothing further upon his own knowledge of the... or concerning officers to whose couers he was variously attached he was in no engagement he... ... .... .... ... claim whatsoever to a pension or annuity except the .... and declares that his name is not on the Pension roll of the agency of any state. Sworn to and subscribed on the day and year aforesaid.

Greensville County Sct. This day John Goodrum... a resident of the said County personally appeared before me John J. Hinton a Justice for the said County and made oath that he believes that George Cain of the said County is seventy five years old or thereabouts that he knows that the same George Cain was in the militia and went from the then county of Brunswick and he believes with Capt. John Maclin that the company to which the said Cain was attached marched from Brunswick thru Sury aand crossed James River at the Ferry called Cobham went to Williamburg, Little York and Hampton to Portsmouth Virginia where they were stationed a considerable time that he was at that time attached to the army the not in the same company that he believes the said Cain was called out again probably several times but this applicant cannot tell how long he served in any or either of the tours but that he has known the said Cain from his boyhood having resided near him and mostly in the said County of Greensville ever since the revolutionary war that he believes the said Cain is a man of irreproachable character for integrity and truth given under my hand and seal this fourth day March one thousand eight hundred and thirty three. I George Cain of the County of Greensville in the State of Virginia being now very infirm in body but of sound and disposing mind and memory do make and execute this to be my last will and testament in manner and in form following viz. In primismis. My will and desire is that all of my estate both real and personal will be sold on such order as my executor hereafter to be named and appointed may think proper, allowing to all of my negroes, that care capable of choosing for themselves as t this right of choosing their masters or other persons to purchase them and that these whose not capable of choosing for themselves then parents may choose for the. My wish & desire is that my executor do contract and sell them to such persons as they may make choice of and the money arising from the sales of my negroes and other ? both real and personal together with what money may be then due me by ? and open accounts or which may be then on hand an uncond? to be divested after taaking out so much as I shall hereafter will away, in the following manner Court. First, I give one tenth part to the then living children of my Brother Howard Cain decd. Item, I give one tenth part to the then living children of my brother Mastoon Cain decd. Item I give one tenth part to the then living children of my brother John Cain decd. Item. I give one tenth part to to then living children of Herman Abernathy decd who married my Sister Elizabeth. Item. I give one tenth part to the theen living children of Labun Abernathy decd that he has to Sister Celia. Item. I give one tenth part to the then living children of my Sister Lucy Lanier decd. Item I give one tenth part to the then living children of my brother in Law Maclin Bass decd. Item. I give one tenth part to the then living children of my Sister in Law Susannah Short. Rebecca Kirby decd. I give one Tenth part to my Sister in Law - Susannah Short. Item. I give one tenth part to my niece Susan C. Hall, formemerly Susan C. Abernathy and daughter of Jesse Abernathy. Item. I give to my niece Mary Smith formerly Mary Kirby the sum of two hundred dollars. Item I give to Sarah Vaughan formerly Sarah Andrews Four Hundred dollars to be placed by my executor in the hands of some proper person for her benefit to applied before fully for her benefit as she may need it. Subject it in no respect to the contract claim of her husband. My wish is that Burwell G. McLemore and his sister Rebecca G. McLemorre should continue to live with me during my affliction and that my executor pay them for their trouble and attention to me during my affliction. Lastly I nominate and appoint my friend Thomas Spencer executor to this my last will & testament and require him to give no security for his executorships. At a Court held for the County of Greensville the 6th day of January 1840. This paper waiting purporting to be the Last Will and testament of George Cain decd was produced unto Court by Thomas Spencer the executor therein named proved accordinnng to law by the oaths of Augustus C. Butts and John P. Hardaway the subscribing witness thereto, and orders to be recorded, as the last will and testament of said George Cain decd. And on the motion of the said executor who made oath thereto the will directing no security to be given entered into and acknowledged a bond in the penalty for $? conditioned as the law directs. Certificate is granted to the said Spencer for abtaining a probate of said will in due form. Teste: William Blow.
