    Notes:

Johannes was an orphan according to most family stories. Another says he had sisters: Mrs. Oberg (Wahoo), Mrs. Bang (Sweden), and Nilla. He came to USA in 1868. Mrs. Oberg moved to Los Angeles CA. He was orphaned at the age of 9 years. The name was Nillson in Sweden. He changed it when he went to work for the railroad in Kearney NE. in the late 1880's. He first located in Mt. Pleasant, Henry, IA and attended the Swede Bend Church near Manson, Pocahontas, IA. This was the first Missioon Covenant Church built in America. He moved to a homestead 5 miles south of Wahoo. Soon gave up the homestead and moved to Kearney and worked on the B. & M. railroad until 1881 when he returned to Saunders Co. and a farm near Swedeburg. He was the third Postmaster of Swedeburg, from May 12, 1881-Jan 31, 1886, the office being in his home during that time. The office was moved to Swedeburg when the railroad came through. He was naturalized in 1876.
On a marriage licence in Kearney, he listed the names of his parents in Sweden. As far as I know, this is the only mention of those names, ever.
In the 1880 census they were living in Kearney City, Buffalo, NE and he was a section boss for the railroad.
The 1920 census lists a Matilda Martinson, age 57 (b. 1863) as head of the house? John is also listed as head of house. Elvera, age 13, is the only child still at home apparently. Who is Matilda Martinson?

    Notes:

"My mother had two brothers in Sweden named Sven and Johan. Sven disappeared altogether while he was comparatively young and neither mother or Uncle Johan were ever able to find any trace of him. Their names and mother's maiden name was Kinman and Johan had a job or position somewhat similar to our Forestry Division and the head-office from which he worked and was connected was undoubtedly at Stockholm, Sweden. Johan was married and had two children, Sten and Lisa (pronounced Leesa) whwhen my mother made a trip to Sweden in the early 1900's. Her brother's address then, as near as I can remember was Jagmastare Herr J.E. Kinman, Lindkoping, Sweden. This was some small town or village evidently not too far from Stockholm. Another place often mentioned was Eksjo. My cousin Sten came to the U.S. sometime around 1913 and landed at Johnstown Penn. and got married there and settled down and was there when we were with Glenn at Falls Church in 1951, and I had most surely planned and hoped to go see him when we were that near, but Glenn's hurried call to go back to Japan (and we getting his boys on our hands) cancelled those hopes and plans, and a few years later Sten passed away". This from a letter to my father, Fred Martinson dated March 13, 1963 from George M. Nelson. Sara came to America in 1878. Sara arrived in the port of N.Y. on September 9, 1878 aboard the steamship S.S. The Queen.

    Notes:

Peter was born in Ostra Espings parish, Sweden. Peter, also called Pete or Per, came to America in 1881. He settled in Mead NE and worked on farms there until 1886 when he purchased his own place. Leonard Palm stayed with Elsa and Peter as a boy when they lived in Ceresco NE. Leonard says that while Peter worked for the farmer in Mead, they did not pay him but kept track of the money they owed him. The amount grew until they gave him the farm in Ceresco, which they owned in stead of money. His farm was in the Rock Creek Precinct, section 4, 155.20 acres. It was 5 miles west and 5 miles north of Ceresco NE. Fred Martinson, interviewed a relative and made notes that Peter P. Eklund had a brother in South Dakota. The notes alslso say there were twin girls, Anna and Hannah. It is not clear however if they were sisters of Peter Eklund or daughters of the South Dakota brother?? He died of heart problems. Leonard Palm said Peter was bedridden for quite some time before h he died. His fathers name was Per Pearson, born in Sweden (from death cert.). One family story says he had a twin brother that came to America at the same time and stayed on the East Coast never to be heard from again. George A. Notes:

Peter and Elsa lived at 225 Spruce Street in Ceresco NE. The home is still there (July 2004). Elsa caught her clothing on fire while cooking in this home in Ceresco NE. She died from the burns later that day. She was starting a fire in her cob stove using kerosene. Somehow she caught on fire and ran outside to neighbors for help. Her daughter Edith was close by and rode in the ambulance with her to Wahoo. Elsa, in great pain, sang hymns in Swedish all the way to the hospital. She sppoke a very broken English. Swedish was spoken by all while in her home. On the death certificate, George Ecklund gave her fathers name as Nels Pearson. The dates of birth and death on the death certificate differ from others I have collected buut they are what I have used here. It listed her name as Elsie. She came to America in 1887 and settled in Mead NE. Her obituary says she had 1 sister and 1 brother in Sweden at the time of her death. Her marriage date was listed as Oct 7 1887 iin that obituary. It also listed two surviving brothers, Ole Nelson of Fremont NE and Louie Nelson of Valparaiso NE. It said she had one sister and one brother in Sweden. Leonard Palm stayed with Peter and Elsa as a child. He said Elsa was nearly blind with cataracts when she died. Leonard said Peter was bedridden for a very long time before he died.
In the 1900 census, she said she had born 5 children and 4 were living. Her gravestone reads Elsie, so I added that name to my record.
