    MERLYN NELSON: born Dec. 23, 1922. Graduated from high school in Tribune, Kansas. Worked for a short time in Topeka for his Uncle Mart in egg-drying factory, then joined the U. S. Marines, where he took cadet training for pilots, like his brother Wallace. Was commissioned a lieutenant and became instructor in flying for the Corps. Was sent to the Pacific theatre of war and while there advanced to 1st lieutenant. Returned and attended Oregon Uni., where he graduated with high honors (one of three highest) and was awarded the Phi Beta Kappa. Won scholarship in diplomatic sciences at Virginia Uni., where he received his M. A. degree and has completed work for his Ph. D. He married Josephine Schaefer (Jo) of Topeka, Kan., and they will live in Washington, D. C. They have two children: Michael Eugene, born July 28, 1945; and Sally Jo, born Feb. 15, 1949. Lutherans. He is a major in the Marine reserves.

    LBJ Names "Little Cabinet" Men

    JOHNSON CITY, Tex. (UPI) - President Johnson chose Joseph W. Barr of Indianapolis, Ind. Sunday to be undersecretary of the treasury. Barr is a former House member who has been chairman of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. since Jan. 23, 196
    To be assistant of the treasury for international aaffairs, the president announced his selection of Merlyn N. Trued of Ridgewood, N.J. Trued has been deputy assistant secretary since February 1963, and acting assistant secretary since last Ober.
    In another "little cabinet" appointment, Johnson picked Anthony M Solomon, now deputy assistant secretary of state for economic policy to be assistant secretary for economic affairs.
    The President announced also the names of new ambassadors to the Netherlands, Uruguay, Jamaica and Morroco and a new minister to Bulgaria.

    MERLYN NELSON TRUED -- International Banker

    Merlyn Nelson Trued, 75, a retired international banker and financier who during the 1960s was assistant secretary of the treasury for international affairs, died of complications from pneumonia Feb. 13 at a hospital in Hanover, N.H.
    Mr. Trued, who lived in Washington, was visiting relatives in New Hampshire when he was stricken.
    He also had served as chief financial officer of the Inter-American Development Bank from 1970 to 1976.
    Before his 1961 appointment to the Treasury Department, he had been a vice president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and financial manager of an engineering firm in Saigon.
    After five years with the Treasury Department, he left in 1966 to become senior vice president for international affairs with the Central National Bank in Cleveland.
    He was chairman and chief executive officer of a commercial bank in Detroit from 1976 to 1978 and director of the Bermuda Monetary Authority in Hamilton, Bermuda, for four years until his retirement in 1983.
    Mr. Trued was born in Ceresco, Neb., and graduated from the University of Oregon. He received a master's degree in international affairs and a doctorate in international finance from the University of Virginia.
    His marriage to Josephine Schafer Trued ended in divorce.
    Survivors include two children, Michael E., of Springfield, and Sally J. Trued of Hanover; two brothers; and seven grandchildren.

    Merlyn married Josephine Elizabeth Schafer. Josephine was born on 16 Mar 1924 in Perry, Kansas; died on 17 Jul 2011 in New York; was buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

    Josephine Elizabeth Schafer Trued passed away in New York on Sunday, July 17, 2011.

    She was born to William and Minnie Schafer at their farmhouse in Perry, Kansas, on March 16, 1924.

    She graduated from Perry High School in 1941, and entered the nursing program at KU.

    She left the program to marry 1st Lt. Marine Air Corps Merlyn Trued in 1944. She supported his education through graduate school, and through his long career as an international economist which included his being appointed Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury by President Kennedy.

    She and her husband had two children, Micheal Trued (Alice) of Lorton,VA, and Sally Trued (Nicholas Shorter), of Hastings-on-Hudson, NY.

    She leaves behind many beloved relatives including seven grandchildren and her sisters-in-law Oleta Schafer, Gladys Schafer, Betty Atwell, and Thelda Schafer.

    She was preceded in death by her brothers, Bill, Truman, John, Eugene, and Bob.

    She returned for the Schafer annual family reunion in Perry whenever she could and never lost her love of that area and its history as well as maintaining a strong sense of the importance of family.

    A small, private memorial service will be held on August 14, 2011, at Cape May Point, New Jersey. Interment will take place in October 2011 (TBA) at the Arlington National Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

    HERMAN SIGFRID: Born on Nebr. Homestead. Attended public schools and Luther College. Later attended an engineering school in Kansas City, Mo. He early assumed leadership and responsibility on the farm and instituted many improvements there. Waas liked by the younger kids and always sided with them. Worked at Milo Gross Grocery in Ceresco, and later together with a partner, acquired the Buick agency in Ceresco, where they established a garage. He married Hulda Nelson in 1912, sister of Carl, missionary to China from Missionfriends church. She has been a wonderful mother and housemanager to many boys. Herman took up land in Tribune, Kansas, where Luther, Martin and Carl had preceded him in breaking sod into wheat land. They have retired after much hard work, to Santa Cruz, Calif., where Herman
