We attended the annual Swedish Candlelight Service at Ryssby Church near Longmont on Sunday evening. In the English sermon, the pastor mentioned his participation in the 100-year observance of the 1862 Sioux Uprising in Minnesota. Just a week earlier, I had been reading about the effect of that conflict on the Kreifels family during their time in Minnesota.
I did a little more digging this morning and came across this excellent 4-minute video which does a good job of explaining the whole thing. The video was prepared in anticipation of the 150th year observance of this sad event.
Wikipedia also has a good article about Episcopal Bishop Henry Whipple, who successfully led the clemency movement with regard to the Dakota warriors who had participated in the massacre.
I had never heard of the uprising until doing research on Dale’s family.
